Did You See: Les Enluminures at The Winter Antiques Show

The 58th Annual Winter Antiques Show benefiting the East Side House Settlement was held at the 66th Street Amory last week, and housed some of the most exquisite antiques and furnishings. Of all the beautiful things to admire, I absolutely fell in love with the collection of Medieval Rings from Les Enluminures. Owned by Sandra Hindman, Ph.D and located in Paris, across from the Louvre Museum, Les Enluminures has specialized in Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, rings, miniatures and art for over twenty years. Dr. Hindman will be opening a gallery in New York this May at 23 East 73rd Street, which will carry an exquisite collection of Medieval rings and art work.

In addition to the jeweled rings, the Posy Rings were my favorite and on of the most unique features of the entire show. The most remarkable thing about these romantic pieces of jewelry from the past, were the stories they told. These simple gold bands from the 15th – 19th centuries are engraved on the inside with a line of poetry, such as “IN THEE MY CHOICE I DOE REJOICE”. Given as a sign of love to both men and women, these bands are so simple, beautiful and meaningful. Shakespeare often spoke of them in his writing and the intimate messages that were shared between lovers.

For more information and Dr. Hindman’s unique view on the expressions of intimacy these Posy Rings convey, read the book she co-authored TOWARDS AN ART HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL RINGS, published by Paul Lolberton, London or visit her website www.lesenluminures.com.
